- [sorry to waste bandwith with this, Netters, but I _really_ need this. All
- his messages have expired at my site, so I don't have his email address,
- and the phone given in the distribution dox is no fax. My apologies!]
-
- Mr Tattam:
-
- I need to send you a fax urgently on behalf of my organization (this is
- my private news/mail feed). The international phone number listed as a fax
- in your distribution of Trumpet Winsock gives me an answering machine, not a
- fax. Please get back to me ASAP with a fax #, thank you !

- Greetings!
-
- I've been really happy with the following combination:
-
- WS_FTP at 129.29.64.246:/pub/msdos
- QVTNet 3.97 at 129.29.64.246:/pub/uploads
- (or it's home site of: biochemistry.cwru.edu,
- the only problem with this site is that it is
- closed for anonymous FTP access between the
- hours of: 1700 and 0900 EST (GMT -5))
- HGopher 2.4 at lister.cc.ic.ac.uk:/pub/wingopher
- Mosaic 2.0a2 at ftp.NCSA.uiuc.edu:/pc/mosaic
- Trumpet Newsreader @ ftp.utas.edu.au:/pc/trumpet/wintrump/*
-
- Note: 129.29.64.246:/pub/uploads has a good collection of files mentioned
- here, but where possible, I tried to list the home directories of these files,
- in case there is a modification.
-
- Further note, make it a habbit to check the sites listed above for new
- versions! On some of these files (like WS_FTP, etc) they change them almost
- weekly!! Winsock Apps are booming!
-
- Hope it helps!
- Eric

- Subject: Small, experimental FTP site open for the weekend
-
- WHAT'S HAPPENING THIS WEEKEND?
- I've opened up my PC as an FTP server for the weekend to test the system
- out. THIS IS NOT AND WILL NOT BE A PUBLIC FTP SITE. It will be for
- work related and personal use only. But I wouldn't mind if over
- the weekend people logged on, looked around, and did some downloads.
- I want to see what happens when my machine gets a little traffic.
- I also want to see how the server software stands up.
-
- WHEN IT WILL BE OPEN
- >From the moment you read this until about 7am Monday morning, March 14.
- Of course, if my system can't handle the traffic, then it will crash and
- you won't be able to log on.
-
- WHAT YOU WILL FIND THERE
- I have the standard /pub directory with some .txt files explaining
- things. As far as software goes, I've assembled some shareware
- and freeware that I think is worth having. If you're a continual
- Net Surfer, then you probably have all the stuff already. But, I have
- also assembled some Windows Wallpaper bitmaps there, 99% of which you
- have never seen. If you like castles in Germany, then you'll like
- what I have here. Be warned though, these files are up to 900k and not
- compressed!
-
- HOW TO GET THERE
- FTP to 128.183.22.177 and do an anonymous login. It's that easy. If
- your ftp software can't autodetect the type of system it's logging in to,
- then set it to look for either DOS/Windows or Chameleon.
-
- AFTERWARDS
- If you have any problems, could you be kind enough to drop an e-mail
- message to ryan@singollo.gsfc.nasa.gov. If you just want to drop me a
- note saying you were there, loved my collection, and had no problems,
- that would be great too.
-
- FINALLY
- Keep in mind, you'll be reading files from a rewritable-optical drive.
- Those are not the fastest drives in the world (but they're not slow
- either). And my PC is a 486DX2 66MHz running Windows 3.1 and using
- Chameleon 4.0 network software; it's NOT any super multi-tasking setup.
- Although more than one person can log on at the same time, the performance
- will get really slow if they do.
-
- I'm just posting this in the alt.winsock newsgroup because I don't want
- a zillion and a half (that's 1,000,000,xxxxxxxx,000.5!) people attacking
- my machine all weekend long.
-
- So, if you care to take a look, enjoy!

- Subject: Problem with FD_SET & FD_CLR in MS WINSOCK.H
-
- Hello,
-
- For those of you using MS WINSOCK.H watch out for calling FD_SET multiple
- times with the same socket descriptor. If you examine the following macros it
- is clear that FD_SET blindly adds the socket descriptor to the array (and
- FD_CLR only clears a single instance of the descriptor). This can easily be
- fixed by either deleting the break line in the FD_CLR (which will cause all
- fd's with the same number to be deleted) or by adding the code in FD_SET to
- check if the given descriptor is already in the array (best method) prior to
- adding the new descriptor.
-
- This is important if you are porting a UNIX app to NT because UNIX will handle
- this case correctly while the unmodified WINSOCK.H will not.
-
- #define FD_CLR(fd, set) do { \
- u_int __i; \
- for (__i = 0; __i < ((fd_set FAR *)(set))->fd_count ; __i++) { \
- if (((fd_set FAR *)(set))->fd_array[__i] == fd) { \
- while (__i < ((fd_set FAR *)(set))->fd_count-1) { \
- ((fd_set FAR *)(set))->fd_array[__i] = \
- ((fd_set FAR *)(set))->fd_array[__i+1]; \
- __i++; \
- } \
- ((fd_set FAR *)(set))->fd_count--; \
- break; \
- } \
- } \
- } while(0)
-
- #define FD_SET(fd, set) do { \
- if (((fd_set FAR *)(set))->fd_count < FD_SETSIZE) \
- ((fd_set FAR *)(set))->fd_array[((fd_set FAR *)(set))->fd_count++]=fd;\
- } while(0)
-
- Thanks,
-

- I have tried 3 times to reply to your E-mail message, but I keep getting

-
- Sorry, but I'm afraid my response is going to be too brief to be
- useful. :^)
-
- My real background is in Windows programming and support. I am
- familiar with some of the strain that Chameleon places on a Windows
- based PC, from a memory viewpoint, but I'm really not qualified to
- judge the merits of a particular network platform.
-
- Sorry I couldn't be of more help.
